Good News for Green Card Holders: Longer Validity Extension
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has announced an extension to the validity of Permanent Resident Cards (also known as Green Cards) for those renewing their cards. As of September 10, 2024, lawful permanent residents who file Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card, will now receive a 36-month extension.
Previously, Form I-90 receipt notices provided only a 24-month extension of the validity of a green card. This extension aims to reduce challenges for applicants who experience longer processing times for their Green Card renewal.
This extended validity period applies to individuals who have properly filed Form I-90 to renew their expiring or expired Green Cards. USCIS has updated the language on Form I-90 receipt notices to reflect the new 36-month extension.
For those who have lost their Green Card and need temporary proof of their lawful permanent resident status, USCIS recommends contacting the USCIS Contact Center to schedule an appointment at a Field Office. After filing Form I-90, individuals may be issued an Alien Documentation, Identification, and Telecommunications (ADIT) stamp in their passports.
This update signals USCIS’ desire to ease the Green Card renewal process and ensure efficiency for all individuals. As this matter is subject to further updates, we encourage readers to check our website regularly for updates regarding this and all matters related to immigration law.
